Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Having a baby is an exciting time in your life – trust that you are in great hands. Guided by clinical excellence, our care team is the region’s best at empowering you to have the birth experience you want. With continual support offered before, during and after birth – like luxury birthing suites, certified nurse-midwives and postpartum care – we deliver happy beginnings for families and babies.

At VCU Health, you have several options for care. Our obstetricians, certified nurse-midwives, maternal-fetal medicine specialists and nurses work together to provide the best, most attentive care for you and your baby. We have the region's lowest cesarean delivery rate and highest rate of vaginal birth after cesarean - two statistics that prove the expertise of our talented team.

Prenatal Care Options

When it comes to prenatal care, what’s your preference? If you want to deliver with an obstetrician, we have a diverse team of experienced, caring doctors. Or you may want a natural, unmedicated birth assisted by a certified nurse-midwife. If you have a complicated pregnancy, you may see our high-risk team of maternal fetal medicine specialists. Whatever prenatal care you want, know that you are in good hands with our award-winning team of doctors, midwives and nurse practitioners.

Choices in Childbirth

What are your plans for the big day? Do you want to deliver your baby naturally, supported by one of our awesome certified nurse-midwives, or would you prefer to deliver with a talented obstetrician and plan to have pain relief? VCU Health is the state's only Center of Excellence in Obstetrics Anesthesia. Perhaps you’ve had a prior cesarean delivery and want to try a vaginal birth this time? At VCU Health, we offer all of these options and will respect whatever choices you make.

Nurturing Newborn Care

During your stay with us, you and your family will appreciate our comfortable rooms that blend a tranquil atmosphere with state-of-the-art technology. More importantly, you’ll appreciate the support of our nurses and lactation consultants, who will teach you how to feed, bathe and calm your baby. As the only Baby Friendly designated hospital in the area, we educate and help you breastfeed in the hospital and once you are home, if you need additional support. You’ll also learn about safe sleep, car seat safety and when to call your baby’s doctor. Our goal is for you to leave the hospital feeling confident about caring for your baby at home.
